It has been a joy to start an orchid collection at Casa de los Celtas; with between 1.300 - 1.400 species in Costa Rica, its a 'work in progress' we will never complete. So far, we have over 180 named species and over 220 plants dotted around the garden! Exquisite plants - many can also be found on local woodland and riverside walks.

Our gardens are constantly changing as trees mature and nature gives us the surprise of a new fungus or our fist crop of bananas!  Whatever the season, visitors can enjoy nature's beauty, perfect spots for bird-watching, and shady corners for peace and tranquility.

Its surprising how many visitors say they've never really been interested in birds - until they visit Costa Rica and marvel at the wondrous colours that descend on our bird table!  We'll be improving this gallery when we get more photos organised.

It's a reality that the best sights of bugs and beasties happen when you don't have the camera at hand. Happily our iguanas love to pose, caterpillars stick around and animals put in surprising appearances, though we could have done without the skunk which (unkindly!) marked his visit! We always assumed the possums lived in the native woodland but felling a water-apple tree one day, down came mother with a baby on her back and the second baby was rescued for a photo-shot; thankfully the mother returned to rescue him too.

Tropical plants are irresistible and our collection is ever-expanding at Casa de los Celtas. Throughout the year we are surrounded by beautiful shapes and colours, which will improve as our new collections of bromeliads, agaves, heliconias and bougainvilleas develop.

Views of the spectacular Talamanca mountain range - in all its moods - provide our 'Wow' factor! Although we are nearly an hour from the coast, the sunsets can be awesome.  At an elevation of 900m, we often 'live' in the weather, watching clouds develop in the valley and hearing the rush of the Rio General as rain descends higher up the mountains.
